Winner 2014

Alice O'Brien-Gortner

Simon Devitt Prize for Photography
Winner 2014

Alice O’Brien-Gortner is the winner of this years prize for her entry ‘Extinguished’.

My description of her winning entry:

“There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception” – Aldous Huxley

“Photographs are literally made of time. The translation of reality into a photograph creates a medium of pure perception. The theme for this years prize is ‘the in-between, this year’s winning entry ‘Extinguished’ lives in this place. There is a highly evocative, sense of ‘another’ place we get when we experience this photograph. Alice has created an imagined world that perhaps questions more than answers its viewer, inviting us into her world. This photograph leaves us resting in an uneasy place, wondering how we arrived.”
